  6. Welcome to Works! 
  7.  
  8. Multimedia is a new technology, and the new combinations of
  9. hardware and software can present a wide variety of potential
  10. performance and configuration problems. This file contains a
  11. number of tips on performance and system configuration that
  12. you'll want to check if you have any problem running Works, or
  13. if you're just interested in getting the best performance out
  14. of your system. Microsoft's Product Support Technicians are
  15. always available to help you out, but if you check here first
  16. you might find the answer right away.

  19. Sound Problems
  20. --------------
  21. If you don't hear any sound when you play animated movies from the
  22. Works online reference or tutorial, you'll want to make sure that
  23. you have a sound card installed, a speaker hooked up, and the
  24. volume set at a comfortable level. You can perform a sound check
  25. by selecting the Sound option from the Windows Control Panel.

  27. Improving Performance
  28. ---------------------
  29. Microsoft Works for Windows Multimedia Edition uses a lot of your
  30. system memory and speed to display the animated movies and the
  31. online reference. You can improve your system performance by:
  32.  
  33.      A) Adding more extended memory to your system.
  34.      B) Running Works without the SmartDrive device driver
  35.     that Windows may have installed on your system.
  36.     (To disable SmartDrive remove the DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS line
  37.     from your CONFIG.SYS.  For more information see
  38.     Appendix D: Command Lines in the CONFIG.SYS in the
  39.     Windows 3.0 User's Guide.)
  40.      C) Setting up a permanent Windows SwapFile on your hard
  41.     drive (if you're running on a 386). See "Setting Up a
  42.     Permanent Windows SwapFile" Chapter 13 in the
  43.     Windows 3.0 User's Guide. Normally Windows creates its own
  44.     temporary SwapFile, but if your hard disk is full or 
  45.     fragmented, this temporary file occasionally becomes 
  46.     unavailable. Make this SwapFile at least 2048 Kb.
  47.      D) Using a 16 color driver for your display, even if you
  48.     have a 256 color card, when running on a 20 MHz or
  49.     slower system with only 2 meg of RAM. (To change the
  50.     display driver, run the Microsoft Windows Setup program
  51.     from DOS or Windows and select the standard VGA driver.)
  52.      E) Defragment, or "clean up", your hard disk by running a
  53.     disk defragmentation program. Third-party utility and
  54.     disk optimization programs often provide a defragmenting
  55.     program.

  57. Troubleshooting
  58. ---------------
  59. If you're not getting any sound from your system, make sure that
  60. your speaker or headphones are plugged into the sound jack on 
  61. your sound card, and not into the sound jack you may have on the
  62. front of your CD-ROM drive.

  64. If you're running Works on a 386 with only 2 meg of memory and are
  65. encountering out of memory errors, or if the audio is broken up
  66. and animations are slow, you should check to see if you're running
  67. in Standard mode Windows. Choose About Program Manager... from
  68. the Program Manager Help menu to see which mode you're running
  69. in.

  71. If you're in Standard mode, make sure that you're starting 
  72. Windows by typing WIN at the DOS prompt. If Windows defaults to
  73. Standard rather than Enhanced mode on a 386 then it's probably
  74. because you don't have enough memory free. Try removing SmartDrive
  75. from your CONFIG.SYS file, if it's installed, or cutting down the
  76. size of any RAM drive you may have set up. (See Appendix D of the
  77. Microsoft Windows 3.0 User's Guide.)

  79. When running in Enhanced mode on a 2 meg 386 you may still
  80. encounter memory problems or sound breaks. Make sure that when
  81. you start Windows you have a permanent SwapFile of at least 
  82. 2048 Kb. (See Chapter 13 of the Windows 3.0 User's Guide)

  84. Sound breaks on any config with a 256 color card are usually the
  85. result of a low memory situation and can usually be fixed by
  86. switching back to a 16 color driver; this means Works will need
  87. less memory to display the graphics and can use it to keep the
  88. sound and animation flowing smoothly.

  90. Things to Note
  91. --------------
  92. If you wish to leave the Works tutorial temporarily to run another
  93. application that plays sound, quit the tutorial first. Otherwise
  94. the other application may not be able to play any sound.
